Zarana (2014 Kre-O)

I was just remembering that I had a Zarana figure as a kid, but not Zandar. Why? Who knows, maybe I just found her look more interesting. Zandar today seems to me to be sort of clownish. Oh well. I was surprised to see her show up in the Kre-O line when she did, although I suppose the limited number of GI Joe ladies guaranteed her a spot eventually.

As a neophyte brick fan, I’m still amazed by the combinations that are possible even with the limited library that Kre-O had. I don’t know if the mohawk bit showed up first in the Cityville sets or Dungeons & Dragons. Either way, it’s a decent attempt at recreating the whatever-the-heck-it-was hairstyle she sported. Wendy O. Williams by way of Mr. T? I don’t know. Anyway, there’s also a pretty ingenious solution for rendering her weed whacker rifle. I knew those tiny danged ninja stars would come in handy for something other than getting lost in the carpet.

The weird Kreon shoulders also make a little more sense when they’re standing in for the Zartan Family Shoulder Armor. Old Z must have cornered the market on those things back in the 80s. Then again, who wasn’t wearing big shoulderpads back then?

  • Zarana’s costume has probably aged the most. She’s wearing acid wash jeans with tall boots and has some sort of pink, double breasted tunic topped off with an Alex Drake haircut. So where can I get one?

  • I thought they’d use Zartan’s shoulderpad pieces, but I’m glad they didn’t. She would’ve looked like a linebacker! Glad they did a little more hair on the head underneath the mohawk, too.
