Serpentor (2008)

Serpentor (2008)

Included in the same DVD Battle Pack that also contained the oft-requested Sunbow version of Motezuma’s Skeleton, Serpentor is at least interesting. The third modern construction style version of Cobra’s Emperor, he bears somewhat more of a resemblance to his old self than the previous two versions. The result is a bit of recombinant plastic that doesn’t really pay total homage with the Sunbow version it purports on the package, but rather shares its DNA with figures from both the 80s and the aughts.

Earlier versions of Serpy’s costume during the 25th Anniversary series shared a sort of ancient Roman look. Since that mold is used here as well, the ancient world style is still apparent. A few 80s inspired details have been added, like the cobra hood behind the cowl, and the snake motif chest harness. It’s not too much of a clash, but the molded colors seem a little odd. A bit more shiny gold plastic would have been welcome. I also miss the sparkly bits in the cape. But hey, at last there’s a pet snake this time around. Did the snake ever get a name? I think it should have. After all, the Joe animal companions always got a name. What would Serpentor name his pet cobra?

  • Probably something tying to either his Egyptian or Indian ‘past-lives’, maybe a name from mythology.

  • Nice design for Serpy here. But the big question is: Will the gold plastic crumble to dust over time?

  • @ Clutch
I have a bag of gold dust which was once the G2 Autobot Electro

He could call the pet snake “King hiss” but Mattel probably wouldnt approve

When it comes to this guy, i hate the way he was portrayed in the cartoon. His bumbling was worse than cobra commanders yet cobra commander was the one who was punished. I could rant about this guy all day but i wont waste time doing so.

  • Do any Joes suffer from Gold Plastic Syndrome? It’s a problem I’m more aware of with Transformers.

  • I have the single card and DVD pack versions. I combined elements from both figures into one to make a more vintage accurate version. The hood is glued into his back hole, customizers beware.

    • I did the same to one of two single card figures as the DVD pack version I initially got with the entire pack had a faulty arm that didn’t bend at the elbow, and broke so I had to buy a separate one off ebay….then I used the parts to turn a single card duplicate I had just as you did….I actually prefer this figure over the Devils Due inspired single card version and at least its better than the awful version that came with his Air Chariot as part of the 25th range…

I like Serpentor. BUT you can’t have BOTH he and Cobra Commander on the same side….you either have one or the other as absolute Leader…In the cartoon, as he was instantly born an adult, he doesn’t have the experience of growing up, hence he’s so impatient….however, in the comic he was an accomplished Leader who turned Cobra into a recognised nation state….and viable business via the Terrordrome thing….I see him now as Leader of The Coil, the break away Enemy Faction OR as Emperor in a Cobra minus the Commander….As for the ‘gold plastic syndrome’, none of my ARAH stuff, including Serpentor suffered such a fate….guess I was lucky in that sense.

  • I hope in a better version!
