The Power of Packaging: 1986 Sci-Fi

Sci-Fi was a worthy update to Flash, although I still have a soft spot for the original laser rifle trooper. I had no problem with the character’s bright uniform, and I absolutely loved this package art. It strikes you immediately and really sells the specialty. For a Star Wars kid, it was a no-brainer pick.

  • ”Somebody who could qualify for Star Trek.”

  • I didn’t realize how literal the filecard was about having to hold the laser on target. We just used them like Star Wars blasters, right? Though the art misses s a couple of details, it makes Sci Fi look all business.

  • This was one of my brother’s figures. I thought the rifle was a tad too big, though. However, the detail in the filecard did stick with me. And, there were a few times where Sci Fi’s inability to instantly melt a target cost the Joes dearly.

  • One of my favorite Joes from my favorite year of Joes. Always dug hus outfit and boots that Paul Stanley could’ve worn. He looks nice next to Lifeline on the display shelf.

  • Was this the first neon Joe, or would that title go to Lady Jaye, or Airtight? Or both? Zarana, and Zandar, also had a little bit of neon on them. Jerry Houser, who did the voice of Sci-Fi in both the Sunbow, and the DIC episodes, was one of the few voice actors from the 80’s series that took the time to reprise his role for the 90’s series. I appreciate very much that he did that. It’s too bad that they were not able to get other the voice actors, and actresses from back then, like Michael Bell, and B.J. Ward. Even though Michael Bell did the voice of Duke for the Combat Pay commercial, which shows a background scene from G.I. Joe The Movie, and Duke punching Cobra Commander, who is wearing his 1982 uniform in 1990. Really weird commercial. As for Zarana’s voice in the DIC series, I have always had a feeling that the voice actress from the Sunbow series, Lisa Raggio, might be Lisa Corps, the voice actress that is credited for doing Zarana’s voice in the DIC series. Both of these actresses voices sound very similar to my ears, but, it is very hard to find information on Lisa Corps, specially a photo to compare with Lisa Raggio. I would appreciate any information that anybody might have about this. Eventually, there is going to have to be all kinds of information about the DIC series that will have to be revealed to the G.I. Joe fans. And as a huge fan of G.I. Joe, I am looking forward to that.
