Flying Submarine (Geewunner.com)

Time for another Geewunner creation. This one is the largest and most impressive set we’ve yet covered, and is based on one of the early 80s classics. My original SHARC logged many hours in my family swimming pool during the summer of ’84. By the end of the year, its stickers had been chlorine bleached pretty badly. I didn’t care. It was a blast.

In yesterday’s post, I mentioned the disappointment of not getting a classic WHALE in brick form. Along those same lines, I wanted to see the SHARC done up in the Kre-O style. It’s probably for the best that I didn’t, as it most likely would have been either a small afterthought like the Hasbro Moccasin, or entirely inaccurate, like the Kre-O attempt at a VAMP-like jeep.

Thankfully, Geewunner steps in to offer an accurately detailed and feature rich version of the Joes’ venerable flying sub. Like the other custom vehicles we’ve covered thus far, the sub is impressively large. Seeing a Kreon in the cockpit with room to spare reminds me of the proto versions of the SHARC seen in both the first Sunbow mini-series and early Marvel comic appearances. Weren’t both of them two-seaters? I need to go back and check. Anyway, even if two guys don’t fit, there’s room to spare here when compared to the original.

Several features have been translated as well, including the pivoting wing cannons and a pair of torpedoes. There’s also a handy dandy attachment that lets you attach a figure to the underside. Very cool, although I’ve always wondered how wise it would be to strap yourself to the belly of a flying submarine. Then again, this is GI Joe, so safety be damned!
