Amigurumi Destro

Gaze upon the majesty that is Amigurumi Destro! Complete with arm rockets and grenades, and of course, a badass gold chain.

Ami-what? Amigurumi. It’s the art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. Sure, Destro isn’t a animal or creature, but the point of the style is, obviously, cuteness. The format I think has Mighty Muggs and Combat Heroes beat in terms of loveability. Who knew that the famous Cobra specialist could be so adorable? What toddler wouldn’t want to cuddle with the honorable James McCullen Destro XXIV, head of MARS Industries, as they drift off to dreamland? Maybe he can help them count machine guns to get to sleep.

The origin of this Destro has its roots in a conversation I recently had with my sister in law, Shari, who has been working in the style recently, making crochet fruit and cute little animals for my kids. Since my son Will is no stranger to weapons (I’m father of the year material, I know) we started to discuss making a crochet ninja sword, or even an uzi for him. I even drew a simple schematic of the legendary weapon as an example. Sometime during our discussion, I mentioned offhand that she should make a Destro. A few hours, and Google image searches later, and she was off and running. This is the end result. Fantastic, and fun, I think.

She really hit all the high points of the classic Destro design, from the mask (with cute little crochet bolts) to the wrist rockets and grenades, and even the fabulous gold chain. It’s a welcome addition to the Joe A Day collection. Now I need to get a Pimp Daddy version made. You hear that, Shari? Get to Google Images! Actually, she’s at work on her Etsy page, and plans to make more cute crocheted pop culture creations available.

As far as GI Joe subjects, what should she tackle next?
