Storm Shadow (2002)

I may be in the collecting minority on this, but I don’t mind repaints. I’m definitely in the minority on this, but I like some of the 2002 t-crotch figures. My favorite of the bunch–Storm Shadow.

The first series of the Joe Vs. Cobra series had some dynamic stances molded into the figure. Limited articulation and pre-posed stances are usually derided by collectors who prefer a neutral pose and the ability to put the figure into a variety of positions.

His redesign was an interesting departure from the classic style, combining elements of the Devil’s Due look with some new features all its own. Although there are more straps and pouches on Stormy than a Rob Liefeld splash page, I find myself fascinated by him nonetheless. I really enjoy the color scheme here, as it looks to be a stealth uniform, a good utilitarian idea for a ninja who prefers to wear white. It’s a wonder it took him that long to pick out some ninja pajamas that would allow him to blend in with the shadows. I’m a sucker for specialty uniforms and repaints that put our favorites into different environments. For me, it all goes back to the tan Grunt of 1983, as well as the Sunbow animated series’ penchant for placing Joes and Cobras in scuba and snow gear.

  • If not for the lack of articulation, this version of Stormy might have fared better in something like the ROC movie line. He looks “modern” enough to fit in there.

  • I love all Joe era’s. This was an exciting time to be a Joe fan. 1st new Joe figs since 94′! I like this grey version but I love the red and white 1st release in the SE two pack the best!

  • This version was notable cause the left arm socket was retooled to allow the arm to actually rest flush with the body. The earlier versions had a big tab of plastic that made the arm kinda “float” away from the body!

I don’t like seeing Stormy in anything other than white, but you gotta love the paint details on the head that allow the Cobra symbol to really show off….the previous versions had an all red face which obscured the symbol.

It’s too bad this mold was never officially released in the wave 1 color scheme with the o-ring…there was a repaint as another character, but never Stormy himself. SS wouldn’t get an official o-ring version until midway through Valor vs Venom! A travesty!!

  • Colors were interesting, but a terrible figure from my experience. The torso plastic crumble near the neck, maybe they screwed it together tight or something.

  • So many good comments you have got here. Your site seems to be quite busy.
