Captivating Cover: Marvel GI Joe #49
Destro and Dr. Mindbender abscond from a well lit tomb with a mummy who is…alive? Talk about sensationalistic. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to sell comics.
In all seriousness, I love one eye peeking out of the bandages. The audaciousness reminds me of American International horror/sci-fi posters of the 50s-60s, in which the actual content of the films at times didn’t represent what was on the poster. Many times the posters were designed before filming began.
That comment about the posters not matching the movies; i know what you mean, I have the Ed Wood boxset.
Mindbenders miscoloured moustache makes him look like a Victorian explorer.
Mike Zeck’s legendary cover art was the only thing keeping me interested by this time. That mummy with the open eye might have made for a better tale than the hopelessly convoluted Serpentor storyline which was going on inside the comic.
I was never a huge fan of Serpentor, but I really liked the 49 & 50 storyline. And a Mike Zeck G.I. Joe cover is always awesome!
