Adventure Team Commander (2013 Kre-O)

A while back, Kirk Bozigian was a guest on Flag Points, and mentioned that the Hasbro Battleship Kre-O sets were basically GI Joe. Looks like someone at Hasbro listened to him. He’s also mentioned several times that kids need to be interested in GI Joe to make the brand the big success it once was. I agree wholeheartedly, and as a collector who’s also a kid who never grew up, I’m very interested in not only seeing GI Joe rise to prominence again, but also seeing it become more of a toy than just a highly articulated sculpture.

Well, you can’t get much more toylike than this. Kreo-O is, of course, Hasbro’s answer to Lego. With the GI Joe sets, I think they’ve successfully brought the same kind of pure fun vibe that Lego has. Now that I have a few of the figures in hand, I can say that they’re the most fun I’ve had with GI Joe in recent memory, at least since Sigma 6. The blind pack figures are inexpensive, and the designs capture a simplified version of old favorites. On another retro Joe toy note, you also get to build them-–just like the old days.

Retro is the operative word with the Adventure Team Commander, a nod to the 12 inch GI Joe of the 70’s. He’s replicated in fine form here as a simplified,  blocky version of his old self, complete with flocked “life-like hair.” And not to be outdone in the wink-and-a-nod department, he’s also the “talking” version, as he comes with two heads, one of which is in mid-yell, much like the illustration on the included tiny boxed representation of himself. Actually, it’s just a sticker that is placed on a thin Kre-O block, but hey, who cares? It’s all fun.
